Hi, all:

I had the California smog check done on my 94 C280 this morning and the mechanic told me that there is a service bulletin that might involve my car. Here is the message shown on the computer. Can anybody find out what VIN range is involved? Thanks.

Bullentin #: CMP95_0131
Date: 01-01-1995
EGR Valve - Replacement

Defect description:
The EGR valve on engines 104 HFM-SFI may stick, causing the "CHECK ENGINE" MIL to illuminate.

Fix:
On vehicles within the effective serial number range (see service bulletin), the EGR valve must be replaced during the vehicles next scheduled maintenance or repair.

I actually emailed MBUSA over the weekend to find out if this was a recall because ALLDATA said that it was... Still no reply from them. I will try again, if it was a recall, then I bet it's free!! Let's hope so.

Hi, David:

The mechanic said that it IS a recall, and the dealers should fix it for free (to us). However, from the bulletin message, I assume that not all 104 engines have sticky EGR valves. Maybe someone who can access the service bulletin would find out the affected vehicles for us.

David C Klasse 04-25-2001 08:30 PM

Oh I see! Hmm, I am going to call MBUSA and check it out.
BTW Harry, where'd you get your smog check? Did you ever visit Zito's Autocare?

Thanks for the info Arthur. I know my VIN #, but how do I find my chassis number? Is it under the hood somewhere? Thanks.

There is a production code stamped on the EGR valve itself. This code will determine if you have the faulty EGR valve. We were required to check vehicles in the affected VIN range but, not all had the faulty valve.

D.K.,
Your chassis is
202.028

David C Klasse 04-25-2001 10:03 PM

ON your page that you sent, how can I find which CHASSIS, END, NUMBER RANGE, that list that is there... how can I find one is me? Thanks Arthur.

Arthur Dalton 04-25-2001 10:14 PM

Look across from model 202.028
If the serial # of your car is between the
vin end #'s in the Notice, it is possible you have the sticking valve.
However, as Chow said, the date code on the valve itself
will tell for sure.
That code is 94T174.

David C Klasse 04-25-2001 10:58 PM

OK, EGR Valve is under the air intake housing, between the engine and the air filter and it has a vacuum lin going to it, correct me if I am wrong.

On the top of the valce is said INS 25 (25 was below the INS).
On the side the part number was 002 140 03 60
and below that it was 135700 1530 XXX (couldn't read the last 3 numbers.)

Mercedes Benz said that my car was no affected, so I don't even know why I am doing this! But I thought I'd be safe.

David C Klasse 04-26-2001 06:33 PM

Oh, DUH! Stupid me, I must not have looked close enough! Thanks for the help. NO sticking EGR valve for me! Thanks everyone.
