Any thoughts on how to eliminate brake squeal? I replaced the brake pads on all four wheels of my '88 300E and now get a squeal from the rear wheels most times. I did use anti-squeal paste.

Well you have a common problem. You may have a glaze buildup on the pads. Two schools of thought. Replace with a different material ie, newer carbon fiber-metallic blend, or do a couple of full tilt boogie panic stops (using common sense and safety) to try and burn glaze off. This usually helps for a while, but it eventually may come back.. This can be a pain in the butt to get rid of sometimes.

What pads are you using? MB or another brand?

I purchase the pads at two different times and changed the front and rears on two different weekends. The front pads are OE "official" MB pads and the rear are an aftermarket brand. The front pads did squeal some the first few days but now do not seem to be making any noise. It has just been a few days now but the rear pads are squealing most of the time (at low speed). I may need to switch to OE pads on the rear. I did notice when doing the rears the spring on one side was bent a little differently than the other side. I thought I might see about new hardware (springs & pens) to see if this would help.

I had aftermaket pads on the rear and it would squeel when reversing. The noise abated immediately when I put MB pads on the rear.

I made the mistake of
putting aftermarket pads on the wifes CRV. I will never do that again. They stop fine, they just make such a fuss.
The MB's are all OEM. Jim '85 300D '95 E320 '97 Honda CRV |

Spray Can
There is a brake squeal spray eliminator I use on my MB. It will stop it for a while. You can get it at most parts stores.

I was at the MB workshop yesterday and asked how come its so common for brakes to be squeaking. I was told that nowadays, manufacturers have conditioned their terms to state that they guarantee the brakes but not the squeal. What is going on?

Listen up!
To eliminate squeel... remove pads... take hack saw and cut down the length of the pad in the center to a debth of 1/2 the thickness. Then file off the top and bottom edges of the pad so that there is no right angled edge. reinsert pads and they will not squeel. What you will have done is to eliminate the reason the pads were vibrating. All other cures are only temporary. Smiles.

Aftermarket pads!
Had the same problem w/ my '94 S500.
Front pads would make a 'grinding' sound; the rear pads would squeak (very, very loud!) when backing up. Both were on the car when I bought it. Replaced both with Textron pads for front and rear. No grind, no squeak. As I understand it, Textron are MB pads without the MB star on the box (ie Textron makes them for MB). |

Jim... I am repeating what I read on a post about 5 days ago. It was not clear to me either but everyone claims it works. Try checking back and see if you can find the thread.
I think cutting against the direction of disk flow(at right angle) would make more sense. [Edited by ejsharp on 04-27-2001 at 11:15 PM]
