I drive a 1987 300E with the us headlights and I do not have the cash available to buy euros, so I was wondering if it is possible/legal to replace the headlights (not fogs) with a yellow bulb as they give off more visible light and make it easier for the driver and other drivers to see the car. I know the euro racers are using them, so it has to make some sense. Correct me if I am wrong. Also, what brand makes these lights? Thanks a million.

I beleive that PIAA makes ion yellow bulbs.

The all yellow lights don't put out more light, they put out less (as do Blue bulbs! less light because the yellow was filtered out). The white light is filtered so that there is less blue to scatter (hence the yellow appearance), and are regarded as "all weather" lighting. I don't think they put out more light. However, they do reduce glare and use them in fog. There is a lot of talk on this subject. You can also check out http://www.philps.com
for their auto lighting section. There was also a article on this and lights in general in Motor Trend or some magazine a few months back. I know for me that yellow reduces the glare of fog but, does nothing for me in the rain though neither, does the white, blue, or whatever color do either. I think if you have the time and money the E-code lights are worth it.

JCE is right...they do put out less light that is why they are used for fog lights. The funny thing about fog is the more light you beam out into it the less effective the light is.

i also have a bit of a fascination with yellow bulbs. my experience has been that the yellow light does NOT shine as bright as a bluish-white bulb. the yellow is toward the warmer end of the light spectrum.basically this light is hotter not brighter.
i just had some hella 500 foglights put on my explorer. [i had been searching quite sometime for some yellow h4 + h3 bulbs]i found some bulbs by hella, "yellow star". i bought some 85 watt h3 bulbs, i love them! they have a bluish-yellow kind of light. it is very effective and unique.
i have some h4 60/55 watt yellow bulbs [not hella] osram, my wife hates them so much she will take our explorer instead of m.b. if they are in it.

i am going to buy the 110/85 watt hella yellow star h4 as soon as i can.
