M103 motor mounts
 

I am interested in replacing my collapsed motor mounts on my '91 300se. The right side mount is relatively easy. The left side looks to be a PIA. I can't even see it from above with the intake manifold/fuel distributor in the way. Its the 2 hex bolts that have to accessed from above that I am having trouble with. Does anyone have any tricks/tips learned from doing it that you can pass on ?

Do it blind from below.

Mind how you refit the heat shields or you'll block future access to the bolts.

If you can get/make one, the only way I've done this successfully is by grinding down a 17mm box end wrench to fit in the space, then using a long pry bar to lever the handle against some stout part of the chassis.

Can you remove the arm from the block and work on the allen head bolts away from the car?

A have done this job on two 300Es. Maybe the SE is different, but if you work from above and below, it's a straightforward job requiring no heroic measures or special tools.

I have done this twice on my car but the last was 4 years back. The key is loosen the bottom allen to give you enough clearance between the shield and the allen bolts on the top. Lift the engine with the appropriate instructions then from above or below move the heat shield. Access is gained to the top allen bolts.

If I remember well the right and the left are different. They both look very similar but make sure you put the right one on the right side. Check with where you bought the parts.

No, both sides are the same part. The right side does have a heat shield over the mount...maybe that is what you're thinking of.

They are different on the car in question - 91 300SE.

Oops! Sorry. I was still thinking 300E. My apologies.

And you're right, those SE mounts are entirely different from the E. Please disregard anything I've said in this thread.
