Hey all,

I was just thinking...I've yet to see any members who use Agip motor oils. I personally use Castrol GTX but recently found out that one of Agip's distributorships is about 10 minutes from my weekend place in Cleveland (actually Medina is where they ship from). I hear they make a hell of a good product, but it's not too common in stores, I think mainly in European repair shops.

I live in Italy and use Agip Fuels, and oils. They seem to sell a quality product.

Have not done any research on them, so I can't give much more information.

Here is all the endorsement one would need to use Agip, FERRARI. In all the books I have on Ferraris, showing pictures of the engine compartments, Agip oil is shown on the oil spec. plate. Usually it's the thick stuff like 15W-40 or 50. I would imagine it would cost $$$ since it's imported from Italy. I think reason not many people use it is due in part to availablity and knowledge of the oil's existence. The only time I have ever heard of this oil, is associated with Ferrari and Lamborghini.

Having once worked for a well known Italian manufacturing company, I don't believe I would buy anything made in Italy unless you can drink it.

Agip is one of the biggest and most well known oil companies in Italy but it is not well known to the US. They make excellent quality products and have very good reputation in Europe, (I know them cause I grew up in Europe and lived there for 21 years). Other excellent quality oil manufacturers that are not well known in the US but are very famous in Europe are "Silkolene" and "Elf".

Well, I called the distributor and here's the prices they quoted me:

55 gallon drum: $251.90

5 gallon pail: $25.75

case of 12 quarts: $18.33

The above prices are for Agip Super (it is their petroleum based oil). It's available in many weights, but I asked for 10W-40. I think I may invest in the 55 gallon drum. And if I'm switching from my trusted Castrol, Agip it is. And, as Rick stated, it is extremely popular with the Italian automobile manufacturers.

Hmmm... Wonder if they sell Barolo in 5 gallon buckets? But, seriously, I don't know how long it would take you to go through a 55 gallon drum of oil with that many vehicles, but I vaguely remember reading somewhere that motor oil has a "shelf life". It seems like it was about 3 or 4 years or so. I can't remember where I read that. It may possibly have been an FAQ on one of the big oil company's web pages, possibly Shell or Mobil. I can testify that Rotella-T develops some sediment, which I would imagine is the adatives settling out, after it has been in the garage for a couple of years.

well the topic is too old --- i stumble on it looking for the AGIP information and your previous responses have clear more about how good is this oil. I recently bought a new NISSAN and the dealer uses this oil "AGIP" I'm trying to see who else sells it besides the dealer all I got was AGIP website: http://www.americanagip.com Oil Available in 12X1 liter case and now (2006)the price is 20.67. I stumble in other web sites where they rate motor oils but AGIP was not in their list. US 5 start in oil is Valvoline like to see a comparison between these two, according to my mechanic AGIP has a pretty good biscosity after many miles. Thanks for the previous posts... :)

Recently had headgasket job done to our E320 at an MB specialist who insists on OEM only--came back with 8qts of AGIP 5 or 10w40.

"Brand name" is meaningless. It's all marketing hype. OEMs approve oils based on SAE and international standards.

Decide what standard your oil should meet along with viscosity range and buy on price and convenience.

Gee, now I'll probably opt for some Penzoil or AutoZone Superguard next time I change the oil because yeah, it meets SAE standards. Kind of like putting a Wal-Mart battery in your Mercedes.

I understand what you're saying Duke, but its easier to have faith in some brands over others--so I guess the marketing gurus have been successful.

I remember reading that SAE did a oil survey in 2001 and 75% of the motor oils tested failed to meet the SAE specs on the bottle. So, I would just choose ANY motor oil. I agree that many are made under liscense. They take some base oil and add X amount of additives and bottle. I'd say this probably is not the case with companies which are refiners or in the synthetic world make base stock: Agip, Luk, Chevron, Mobil come to mind.

We are talking Benz's still right? Each manufacture pays for testing of oils to prove they meet MB's specs before they are included in the approved oil list mercedes maintains. I'd pick an oil that meets the requirements.

i agree with Duke....but i usually draw the line at auto parts stores brands...

although its interesting...those brands seem to meet the latest guidelines....

i have been doing great through pep boys and their oil rebates.... it usually costs me no more than 1.00qt... or 2qt for synthetic.

Well then if he insisted on OE only, Mobil 1 0w40 is what MB specs out.
