Test drove a C280 today....couple questions?

I test drove a nice '97 C280 today and it drove great but a few times it seemed to drop into 2nd and 1st a little abruptly........maybe it's normal but I'm not sure?

Thanks,
Aaron

On that & any early 722.6 electronic auto trans, have someone with a scanner read shift adaptation figures fron trans computer...ODB2 won't do that.

IF any of the figures are at OR nearing 180Nm then that clutch pack is Gone.

Is this more of a dealer thing?.......is this common knowledge or are they going to look at me "sideways"

Thanks much.

Not normal. I dare you to bring a 1997 C class to a dealership's service department. Be ready for a rude awakening. If you search on 722.6 you'll see what's up with that tranny. Repair is $1,500 to $6,000.

I don't know what you define as "abruptly", but I believe the transmission in my E430 shifts from 2nd to 1st by itself when coming to a stop.

On the more positive side, the 1997 C280 is a great vehicle. An independent (non-dealership) Mercedes mechanic can take good care of you. The tranny problem may be minor or nothing at all. The downshift to second and first should be silky smooth. Just be aware of what you're getting into.

Many good indie shops have MB SDS laptops & there are at least 5 other scanners that can see that info & even print those results.

If the trans checks out & you have done a pre-purchase inspection, I would proceed with purchasing the car.

Doc's always right, and I agree. The early ones kick a bit when dropping into first. Mine did this at 60k when I bought it, and still does it at 140k. If it were a defect it should have grenaded long ago.

If you buy it, do a total trans service.
