Suspension question for a 1991 300E
I just bought a 91 300E and am very happy. I notice when driving, especially at lower sppeds, when I hit a small bump, I feel a slight clunk in the steering wheel. Nothing major, but it is there. COuld this be the tie rods? Ball joints? Steering damper? Or something more? Also, how hard is it to change this for someone with moderate mechanical skills( I change my own brakes, radiators, belts, hoses, etc). Any info would be greatly appreciated as always.

IF it is the steeringdamper, it is cheap ( @ 30.00 ) and easy to replace.
Two bolts/nuts to remove and it's done. To test it, you could undo 1 end and push/pull on the free end, to test for resistance. If it extends/collapses without much resistance, it is shot. Here you go. http://catalog.eautopartscatalog.com/mercedesshop/sophio/wizard.jsp?partner=mercedesshop&clientid=catalog.mercedesshop&baseurl=http://catalog.peachparts.com/&cookieid=1XC0ZKQX91YF1DUCFL&year=1991&make=MB&model=300-E-002&category=M&part=Steering+Damper

It could also be one of your front sway bar bushings has worn off or slipped. Check the length of the sway bar and all connections.

Okay, I just did the 6/12 3/9 test, and on the drivers side, there was no play doing 3/9, but there was slight play doing 6/12. On the passenger side it was the opposite, no play doing 6/12, and a little play doing 3/9. Any thoughts?
