random 280e facts

i was studying my haynes for the 123 280. i found some things of interest:

1. the compression is listed from 8.0 to 9.4 to one. someone recently stated that 9 to one was the highest. the 9.4 is the euro compression.

2. i noted that it stated that oil coolers are fitted to cars equipped with air conditioners. there has been some discussion about what models and markets fitted them. so since most us cars have air, we are used to seeing them with coolers.

3. it states the the car has disc brakes either solid or ventilated. it does not give any dimensions that correspond with vented rotors though.

4. i noted that it shows the internal rubber or plastic snubbers that fit on the shock shafts to limit travel. i dont remember seeing these on my bilsteins. are they used or not? and if so only on some models?

5. i have also been pondering using a manual steering gearbox to reduce weight. it is noted as an option. someone noted that if i change it i will need a longer tube on the steering shaft. about 2" longer. this was noted too in the haynes manual.

6. also it notes as an option 185sr15 tires. i suspect that my 280e car may have had these from the factory to go along with the 369 gear and the high sitting springs. for extra ground clearance.

7. and finally it states that on the 123 engine (250) the flywheel has a peg to locate it. and the 110 has witness marks.

i was looking for information that i might use to advantage in the next years autocrossing.
