K&n filter??
 

Is it safe to put a k&n filter ( 2 since i have the v-12) on my 92 s600?

I read that some diesels had problems with them, but is it fine for a gas engine? Thanks.


And how much is K&n filters running these days? I havent bought one in years when I put it on my camaro a few years back.

Some people like them, some don't.
I've used them on all my vehicles for the last 20 years.
For prices you need to call your local Speedshop.

Well actually I just checked at kragens and there 42 bucks. So it would be 84 bucks for 2. Whats t he problems people have? I always liked them. Are they going to damage something?

Some people claim they will damage electronic items, such as the mass airflow meter.
If so, I would blame it on " over-oiling " the filter when servicing.
Other people may look for increased horsepower ( over a " restrictive " paper element filter ), which I think is mostly marketing hype. ;)

I've used K&N filters for years too and can tell you from the oil samples I used to do that they did no harm to the engine. My silicon levels were always low as well as all other wear metals. As soon as the paper filter gets dirty enough in my wifes E320, I'll be replacing it with either an airhog or K&N.

The main complaint about the K&N filters is basically that while they let more air into the motor, at the same time they let in too much dirt and airborne particulate matter into the motor.

This has been debated before on the forum, and I personally elected to stay with the factory Mercedes Benz air filter.

I doubt you will be able to find one for under $42.00 though

The only sure way to tell is to do an oil sample. Pull a sample before you install a K&N then do one after 5K miles or so after installing it. Blackstone offers the kits for free, then when you send it in it costs about $20 to have it analyzed. This will tell you for sure if you're doing any damage to your engine, of which I would be surprised if you do. Go to http://www.blackstone-labs.com/ and order your free kits if you want to know for sure what's going on in your engine. Heck, it's a good idea to do one every now and then just to keep an eye on things internally.

I've attached one of the oil sample sheets from Blackstone on a truck I used to own. I ran a conical high flow filter in this vehicle that was the same oiled gauze that the K&N is made of.

The first thing the counterman asked my at the Cadillac dealership whan I bought a maf sensor for my '97 Eldorado was if I used a K&N filter. GM won't honor warranty repairs if the customer uses a K&N filter.

No K&N filters don't belong on a $40k V12.

Chances are they will blow your $600x2 MAF sensors.

They make a little more power by way of less restriction. After reading a bunch about this and then tracking it on my BMW motorcycle which uses the same components as you are, I decided to remove them all and go back to the Oem filters in all of my stuff. They make the biggest difference in the diesels inmho. You could actually see particulates that were not evident with a good paper filter. I wouldn't do it if I were you.

They will only make a slight difference at a high-rpm WOT run. The other 99% of the time, it's a waste of money.

MB designed those filters to supply the engine with more than enough available airflow.
