What I do on my CLK softtop is a good cleaning with car wash or Mothers convertible top cleaner with a horse hair brush(from Griot's Garage), rinse, and, when dry, go over it with a tape-style fabric brush to remove any clinging dirt. Then after masking off windows and paint, apply Scotch guard fabric protector. I do this twice a year(spring and fall). My top is black, I have no discoloration or fading. I have seen a kit of cleaner and protectant offered in Precision Automotive Products catalog and same kit in Beverly Hills Motoring accessories catalog but I have not tried it. carcareonline.com has a good how-to article that recommends Porsche products, which they sell. I haven't used it because the overspray can ruin any unmasked paint (scared me away). Good luck!
