I hear this once before.... but not sure if anyone knows where to get one. I want to replace the plastic undercarriage covering (under the engine) with a metal one to further protect the oil pan; I've cracked it once before. Now ever since I did that, I have been much more careful... but I still want to have the extra protection just in case. Does anyone know if these are attainable? And if so, where? Thanks. :) :)

David, I have never seen such a device, but, having said that, I am sure that any decent welding or sheetmetal fabrication shop could make one up for you. I have checked all of the aftermarket catalogs I have and no joy.. If there are any racing outfits near you, check them out, they might be able to fix you up with a nifty skid pan. Otherwise, just be careful on choosing your potholes..

No one would be able to see the stupid metal undercarriage! ANd I know, but I know how I can be, and I want the metal one, if there is one, just as added insurance, just in case. BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY!

David,
Theres only one person who can help you. MBENZ.E-mail him. Clauser1 |
I would suggest sheet aluminum as a material. In addition to my MB, I also own a Volvo. I've worked a lot with a company called iPd. They're an aftermarket company that focuses on Volvos. They carry not only standard plastic belly pans, but also aluminum ones for those looking for more protection. Perhaps they could steer you to their
belly pan manufacturer. http://www.ipdusa.com |

My apology to all the after market suggestions, but steel carter protection plates are genuine mercedes parts! Mercedes sells the steel carter protection plate as option # 481 and as Clauser already guessed: I have one under my C250D. The necessary part#s (for the C class) and some additional pictures are displayed on my own website... http://members.tripodnet.nl/mbenz/0ff04960.jpg http://members.tripodnet.nl/mbenz/101c8960.jpg http://members.tripodnet.nl/mbenz/10773820.jpg For the C class you need to order the steel plate with mounting bracket (and bolts + nuts). The isolation material is normally for diesels only. The dirt covers have to be modified to be able to install the mounting bracket, but since the parts that needs to be removed is pre-pressed in the dirt cover it is an easy plug and play. These plates are available for the W201 and W124 (and other models) as well and are not for dune-buggy use only. The steel carter plate under my former 190D (that was lower as my current C250D) saved my engine for oil leakage several times. greetingz, |
Steve,
Where on your website can I find the info on the undercarriage? Also, do you know the part numbers (s) and cost? Thanks. :) |
no need for metal pan
David,
Here in Texas, I see many pickup trucks jump to curb to exit the freeway into the feeder road. Unless you make many U-turn in the middle of PCH (I used to live in Huntington Beach). I don't think you'll need to switch. jack |
You can access page about the steel carter protection plate from the index page (the one you get two as soon as you "enter MBenz", from the "fully loaded" page and from the "1985 190D" page.
All necessary part#s for the steel carter protection plate on a W202 are displayed on that page and I had to pay around 400 Dutch guilders (don't know exactly anymore) for a complete new set (approx. 180USD). greetingz, |
That sounds like the way to go.....it's hard to beat an OEM/M-B part.
To MBenz, I think your sight is great. I'm new to M-Bs.You obviously are not. Looking forward to more information on many topics from you. Thanks! |
