Winshield Wiper Transmission?

I have a 2000 C230 K. My windshield wiper is not operating (it is making a groaning noise). I took it to a local auto repair (specializes in foreign vehicles) and he said it is probably the "windshield wiper transmission" and would cost $540. part plus around 200.00 in labor. I have never heard of this part. I googled and I found the windshield motor for @ 141.00. I cannot find the part he is mentioning. Does anyone know the answer to this? Is this for real? Suffice it to say, I have not repaired the problem yet.

I think he is referring to this,

It could also be a lack of lubrication on the external rods in this assembly. Search the forum for directions on cleaning and lubing. It's very easy to do.

thank you for the help

Sorry the reply took so long. I moved and I have been working at my new job (much OT)I tried the lubrication process. Sadly, it did not work. I had high hopes. The grinding noise is coming from inside the assembly so, it is definitely the expensive piece that needs replacing! I sparyed the windshield with rainex and it has done the trick until I can afford the part!!

You've only touched the surface of the lube job. 2 more steps.

The following thread shows how to take out the entire wiper assembly [$500 part] containing two gears. Hopefully neither are stripped and all you need is a good clean & lube.
How to grease 300E wiper gearbox

While you have the assembly out, use star drive and remove trasmission coer attached to motor. One 4" plastic gear and one steel screw. Hopefully the plastic one is ok. Clean & lube.

While you have the wiper assembly out, you can change the cabin filter if it's located under it.

Good luck
Bob
