hello, probably redundant, but,

I own a 1986 300E benz, it was a pretty much free car.
I took it to pmc in phoenix and had them do a diagnostic on it because I did not feel comfy not knowing what was wrong with the car and taking it to half-behind mechanics so they could guess and i would end up throwing away money.
pmc gave me a list of things wrong and i noticed that the engine type they had listed was180.8 cid, i am confused because I thought the 300 E had a 103.xxx type engine.
why is there this difference in reference numbers for my car?
Irrelevant to this, I love the thing, it has enough pep to satisfy me, even thou it still looks better than ALL of the rice burners that could probably beat me in a 1/4 mi. haha
I don't have to go fast to get a great driving experience and love it!

Confused:

I have no idea where the numbers came from.
Your car is a W124 Sedan:

Chassis 124.030
Engine 103.983 I6
Model 300E
Years 1986-92
HP 177
Weight 3295

103.983 is the type number of the motor in Mercedes-Benz series of engines. It's a designator only and has no direct relationship to the displacement, horsepower, or anything else, except that there are other motors slightly different in the same (103) series. Think of it as a name.

The size of your engine is 180.8 Cubic Inches Displacement, commonly abbreviated as CID. That's equivalent to 2962 cc, a bit less than 3 liters, which is where the "300" of 300E comes from. It's not a reference number but a measurement, describing the total volume available for combustion in the engine.

I should have recognized that.
1976 is the last time I recall thinking in CID and not CC.
