key will not turn in the ingition switch
1979 Mercedes 450sl
I just got a new key thinking that the key was worn and it works in everything in the car but the ignition. the old keys started acting like they stick due to not turning in the ignition hole. if i leave the key in after getting it to turn the first time it will always turn unless i take it out? any ideas what to try first. they steering locks in place. the gear shift is not locked in place? |

key won't turn in lock
Hello,
I have had to replace both my 240d and my 300sd lock mechanisms. What happens the lock assembly drys up and starts to stick. This is not the key lock portion but rather the assembly behind. Tricky job to replace, and not cheap. If you are planning to keep the car I would buy a whole new assembly and replace it. If you are DIY person then its doable. I think there's info on how to do it on this web site. On my 300sd what I did was take it out and lube it very well. The assembly is also part of the steering lock and the Ignition. The 240D I just replaced everything because I didn't want my wife to get stuck somewhere. Good luck brian |
