1989 190e 2.6 Just quit running, need some addvise on what test I shoud run

I have hade this mercedes for about 6 years, It has ran fine up until i parked it for about 2 mounths ago. My daughter drove last week for about 6 miles she came to a stop light and it stalled and would not start. I went to go see if it was somthing simple and it started right up I started to drive it home and made it about five miles as i came to the light near my house it died on me and would not start.when I tried to start the starter would turn and i could hear the fuel pump prime the injectors,I pulled the rotor cap to find some currossin clean that up, pulled off the air filter and seen gas vapers after trying to start it.

1.Is the a way to test the electronic ignition moduel with a Ohm meter?
2.Is there a way to test the coil with a ohm meter?
3.I will take any sugestions at this point. My girlfriend said i should sell it for junk how cruel she drives a Chevy AVERO (Bright Yellow :) and do i mean bright :stupid:) all kidding aside I could use some good advise.

Thanks WTaylor

I own 2 cars
1989 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.6 i've had it for 6 years and put 100,000 of the 210,000 on it ( great driveing car when it's running )
1987 Rang Rover (3.5 c.i) with a short wheel base I've had for 8 years 310,000 on it. (This truck is the Mercedes of trucks)

My first guess would be no spark, and you can buy a spark checker that looks like a spark plug for around ten dollars. If you lack spark, my first guess would be a bad cap and rotor. The rotor button can go bad and stilll look ok to the naked eye.

To check for fuel, see if there is any resistance on the flap under the aircleaner while the key is on. If the flap just pushes down, you lack fuel pressure. Try this at your own risk, as when you push the flap down you are injecting raw fuel into the engine while it is stopped, in other words, you could fill the engine with fuel easily.

A large intake leak from a broken brake booster vac line would also cause a no start.

I used a spark plug and held it to a ground I had good fire (blue) ark.
I also pushed down the flap in the throttle body and it went down with some resistance but had no vapor come from it this time but i did smell gas.
I also noticed that as soon as i tried to start and let off the key it sputterd like it wanted to start??
Thanks for your time and help in this matter.

It's hard to say, but it might be the ignition or vacuum if I had to guess.

You know you have spark, but under compression pressure, more voltage is needed to fire the plug. I vote for a bad ignition rotor, it's a maintenence item, and can look good and still be bad.

I would also check the plastic vac line that feeds the brake booster, when they break, they can cause a intake air leak large enough to cause a no start. I've seen it before.

Good luck.

engine quit

While someone else cranks the engine spray some starting fluid into the air cleaner. If the engine starts the fuel pump(s) is bad or the fuel pump relay is bad.
You can remove the relay and jumper circuits 15 and 87 to bypass the relay, if the engine starts in this configuration the relay is bad.
Good luck and post your fix

i don't know...sounds like classic OVP to me

Gilly 12-15-2006 11:47 PM

Not OVP, the car will run without the OVP installed at all, although it can cause stalling problems. Will run just not really good. I'd agree it sounds more like the fuel pump relay, I'd check that out first. If the relay works sporadically it might still reek of fuel or have fumes, but not enough pressure to run.

I vote for bad ignition rotor also. They are bad to slip so you still have spark but it's at the wrong time. Remove the cap and try to turn the rotor by hand. If you can move it yours is bad.

Gilly 12-16-2006 05:50 PM

If that's the case it wouldn't be the rotor itself, it would be a broken rotor bracket.
