Worn motor mounts - poor acceleration?
This is from a car help column. I was wondering about the line from the questioner about the "lost considerable acceleration due to the worn-out engine mount." The columnist doesn't mention the validity of this statement. Wondering what you guys thought.
Q--My 1993 Ford Tempo has a six-cylinder, 3.0-liter engine and also a worn-out engine mount. The worn-out part according to the local Ford dealer is the left rear mount (part #F23Z6038B) and Ford has discontinued its production. The other three mounts for this engine are easily obtained from any aftermarket supplier. Ford dealers and local parts supply companies tell me that no dealer in the country has this part anymore. How am I supposed to stop the car from vibrating so badly when both the OEM and the aftermarket suppliers do not make this part? I have also lost considerable acceleration due to the worn-out engine mount. A--I could not believe that the aftermarket would not have the engine mount (a.k.a. motor mount, transmission mount) for your Tempo so I did some snooping. At least one supplier, Sealed Power, has it as part number 270-2861H. I suggest visiting an independent mechanic who would gladly track down and install the item you need. Dealers usually carry parts going back only 7-8 years and are not a good source of older parts. |

actual acceleration? Doubtful. Reponsiveness? Probably. If the motor is flopping to the side when you throttle it, it's transferring torque laterally through the mount as opposed to directly to the driveline. Seat of the pants difference

Talk about obsolete.
Went to my friendly GM dealer to get some new splashshields ( behind the front rotors ) for my 1990 truck. Verdict: No longer available for a 2-wheel drive, only 4-wheel drive. Aftermarket does not make them either.

Pretty surprising, considering that (at one time) trucks had a longer life cycle.

To answer the original question, I suspect the owner was being extra gentle with the accelerator because the vibration from the worn mount got worse with higher engine speed.

Re. OP's Q, perhaps the throttle linkage has been affected by the altered position of the engine due to the mount?
