What is the idle range for a 1998 E320 Wagon??????? Mine is about 600 rpm (ignoring gauge error).

That is normal. My car is always about that. I get more accurate readings via the climate control though. It varies from 590 to 600, and occasionally to 610. So I think you are right on.

every guage has some inherent error; to include a driver's paralax error from their viewing position. Only a calibrated measuring device is assumed to be accurate.
