Changing Trans Fluid
 

I just bought a 1994 Mercedes C280. It has a lttle over 160,000 miles on it and I would like to change the Trans Fluid. It's seems to be running great as well as shifting fine, I just would like a base to go from, and it can't hurt. Should I go with Syn or reg and what brand?

It's your choice. I use regular fluid.

Are you aware of the unique procedure with MB transmission service... that the torque converter can be drained, and the refill procedure is two steps.

From looking around and learning as much as I can, I have indead found a how to (Change the Trans Fluid) post. Thanks for the heads-up:)

If your transmission is like mine, you'll drain roughly 7 qts from the pan and torque converter. (Sometimes it's a good idea to measure what is drained out to estimate the fill.) After you button everything back up, don't refill the entire charge! The manual indicates that you refill with 4 qts, then start the engine and refill the remaining charge.

I recommend refilling it about a quart low, then run the car until the transmission is warmed up (10 miles minimum), check the level, and top off to the full mark.

Took abouit 1.5/2.0 hrs.:) Just wanted to take my time and do it right. I don't know about all the other Mercedes out there, but changing the fluid on a 94C280 is a piece of cake. Got a new filter and pan seal for about $30 online. Changed to Mobil 1 Syn for about $56 and when I went for a test ride after I was done, I noticed the shifting was much smoother right away. ;)
PS: When checking the pan for metal particals, I found only 1 small speck. Not bad for 160,000 miles:scholar:
