I would do any of the big name 5W-40 synthetics. I'm running Delvac 1 in one car and Valvoline Synpower in the other. Anything below 20F and it's too tough on the car to crank a 10W or 15W.

Ahh so it looks like MB is switching to 5w40.

Dumping it all in one pot..... One of the many reasons I change my own oil.

Just FYI you can buy Delvac 1 over the counter as Mobil 1 Truck & SUV.

I tried Delvac 1 for awhile in my 300E, before I got tired of driving to the not-so-local commercial oil distributor to pick up the 1 gallon jugs of the stuff. Plus it's easier to just stock one type of oil for multiple cars in the garage. But it should work fine in gas engines.

Mobil 1 Truck and SUV isn't the same as Delvac I don't believe, but Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck oil is and that is just starting to hit the shelves now.

Len is right

Yes, there is a distinction.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand. Svc rep said this is the oil they are stoking now, for everything. This is what he put in my 97. So, safe to assume whatever it is is good enough for the CDI engines - per the TSB posted here.

Hmm.........5w40 is a grade I've only seen in Delvac 1, and that would make sense, sense the new CDI needs it. If so, I'm pretty happy! I might just keep running it. Makes for a near-sterile gas motor.

That's correct, the new 229.51 Mobil product is not the same as the T&SUV (AKA Turbodiesel Truck) oil even though they're both 5W40. You've got to keep in mind that the Benz oil specs and API specs are mutually exclusive. The spec can be one or the other, but not both.

I suspect this new Formula M 5W40 is going to be dealer-only. It's a very focused product and there's no reason to think you're going to find it at Wally's Mart.

Ok, so do we know what that formula is? Is MBDOC around? I know he has the answer. They charged me $5.50/qt for the oil. That's not bad! I pay $30 at Walmart for a 5 quart jug of M1 15w50 now.

I think I found it!

From another post - thanks Uberwgn!

Mixing Dino Oil and Syn to Make Syn Blend, Good Idea?

Check his JPEG attachment, 2nd one. Under what looks to me the newest spec "229.51," I see "Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5W40."

That's a new one to me.

Further...

Directly from the Mobil website:

http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lubes/PDS/GLXXENPVLMOMobil1_ESP_Formula_M_5W-40.asp

Product Description

Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5W-40 is an advanced performance synthetic engine oil designed to provide exceptional cleaning power, wear protection and overall performance. Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5W-40 is engineered to help prolong the life and maintain the efficiency of Car Emission Reduction Systems in both diesel and gasoline powered automobiles that require an oil that is approved against Daimler Chrysler's MB 229.51 specification.

Features and Benefits

Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5W-40 is made with a proprietary blend of high performance components formulated to be fully compatible with the latest Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF's) and Gasoline Catalytic Converters (CAT's). Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5W-40 has been designed to deliver outstanding overall performance and protection.

From what I am reading, one can deduce this new oil was SPECIFICALLY created for use in the BlueTec diesels. I'm reverting to dealer oil-changes, and maybe every 7500 instead of 5k.

I have a 94 E420, tried Redline 10-40, leaked out of everywhere. Does M1 leak less in the older 119s?

I suspect it would leak the same. This is a characteristic of synthetic oils... if your car leaks, weeps, or is about to leak, synthetic oil will enhance this situation.

The 190E can use any oil, synthetic and conventional, based on the old approved products chart. I think most folks use a high quality 10W-40 in those cars.
My 99 C280 had it's oil changed last September and they(as written in the service booklet)used Mobil 1 5W40.

Previously they just used M1 0W40.

Not necessarily.

It's a good oil period.
