Speedometer/Odometer not working...

I suspected a broken speedo cable. I checked the car today...and the good news is I was right. It IS a broken speedo cable...The bad news, it is broken at the transmission end. I snapped off where the cable end is held by the 10 mm bolt in the transmission. It is even with the surface in there and I have no room to grab it with needle plyers. I am afraid to push it even further in. Any suggestions...?
In the picture below, the cable is missing about 1 inch. It is inside the transmission end...

I guess I am on my own...I already ordered the cable. I will report the solution down the road.

J.H. Possibly a small mechanics magnet used for retrieving dropped nuts and bolts will pull it out. If not and there is enuff room a strong shop vac might pull it out. IF that doesn't work spray it with Brake Cleaner (leaves no residue) then dry with hair dryer, then while it's still warm put a little hot glue on the end of a toothpick, touch it till it sets then pull the piece out. If no success post I've got more ideas. Knutz.

Knutz, funny you mentioned a mechanics magnet...

I was thinking the same thing. I was waiting to receive the cable to see if the metal core "sticks" to the magnet. I did not think about the hot glue trick. I will try it in that order and then I will post...

Thanks

How about a bilge picker?

Or, for you non-submarine types, a slinky metal tube thing with a claw on the end.

the metal core sticks to the magnet. but, I do not know if the magnet will fit in the transmission end. I will try this weekend...
Thanks for the ideas...

I changed the speedo cable...

The magnet did not work. I ended up using a long flat needle plyers to pull about one inch of cable. I took a lot of pictures with a possible DIY article....Where can I get a web host to post the pictures...? I am web challenged!

Thanks!
