Bob,
I'm not sure what the valve clearance specs are off the top of my head...if noboby posts by this evening I'll look them up at home.
I believe the chain tensioner is a very necessary upgrade, however, if your chain isn't making any noise it's not something you have to do right away. Just plan to take care of it in the near future...don't wait for the chain to start rattling.
You should be able to buy the shims and tensioner from PartsShop, your local dealer, or a good European parts specialist.

MB has a nice sheet on valve adjustment, would be happy to fax to you. It has all needed info including shim sizes & clearance.
Chain tensioner VERY important!

Valve adjustment specs:

cold Intake .10 to .20 mm. Exhaust .25 to .35mm

hot (60-80 degrees C) add 0.05 mm to the above. thrust plates are available in .025 mm increments. Check the valve clearance every 15,000 miles and hope they are in spec. Both camshafts must come off if you need to adjust.

I wouldn't drive the car until the chain tensioner has been upgraded.
