I've had this annoying metal sounding rattle I get underneath my car. It seems to intensify when accelerating and more so when the engine is hot. My mechanic says he can't see what the problem is. He bent a piece of metal underneath he said, but the noise is sill there.

It sounds like something near the exhaust pipe or the drive shaft as I only seem to hear it when it is out of Park. It goes away or quiets down when I decelerate or accelerate from the point of the noise.

Someone suggested that this may be the heat shield out of place, but I don't know where the heat shield is.

I thought they were referring to the flap inside the front end of the manifold, but I found out later that this is related to the EGR valve (recycling fumes, etc.)

Does anyone know what to check out ?

Much thanks,

AARON ROCHARD

Hey Aaron, check out "rattle quiz" thread, this would be a good place to start. It turned out to be a loose parking brake cable that was allowing my parking brake shoes to rattle.

Good luck!

Aaron,

My benz too was experiencing the rattling just as you are describing. Check underneath your car for cracks along the exhaust piping. Sometime that gets old and brittle and can cause your car to "rattle". When the guys talk about the heat shield, they are talking about the little plate that comes between your catylitic converter and your car's body. This piece of metal protects your car from the cat. converter's immense heat.

So do check out any brittle piping. A simple weild may temporary fix it, but in the long run, the whole piping may need to be fixed if you absolutely cannot stand the sound.
Hope this helps.

Are you talking about the exhaust pipe itself ? If so, I had the pipe replaced a year ago and had two different shops check for the noise since it started rattling. I will check the heat shield, thanks for the info. The rattling sound seems to be coming from around the area of the resonator.

Thanks,
