Hi All:

Has anyone tried the new Denso Iridium plugs. The specs look great but not sure about how it works. It looks better than platinum plugs. I heard platinum plugs do not run too good in MB's.

I haven't tried the iridium plugs. Re your comment about using platinum plugs in MB engines, it depends on the engine. I use the platinum with excellent results in my 2.3-16, but they absolutely cannot be used in my 190 SL nor my 300 D. My personal perference are the AEC plugs made from discarded uranium. The problem about them being so darn heavy is offset by the fact that using them causes the exhaust pipe to glow in the dark which I find very cool.

It'll have the same effect as the platinum plugs due, to the electrode being so small.

Hey guys, Champions work just fine. I've had a set in my 300E for 30,000mi. Recently had emmissions test. All zeros. Not too shabby for an M103 with 186,766 and 1 top end overhaul at 163,000.

What exactly is iridium?

BlackMercedes ... I've got five diesels and come to think of it I don't think there is a one in the lot with a spark plug. That's a good reason not to use platinum plugs in a diesel.

Iridium is an element, number 77 on the table of periodic elements. Platinum is number 78, and they are both metals. Conventional spark plugs are made of copper which is number 27.

NGK also has iridium plugs out now, they are more then twice as expensive as Bosch and NGK platinum plugs. They're probably not worth it now, but will come down in price as they become more popular. Platinum plugs caught on quite fast so iridium plugs will probably too. What's after iridium plugs... Osmium?

After Iridium, Meitnerium (Z=109)! But they can only be installed by a Quantum Mechanic, and so far are only available for Carnot engines! ;)

Heat pumps with spark plugs?

Personally I don't see the point. The only area likely to be improved by spark plugs is the idle. Most of these cars idle fine forever with the plugs MB specified at a great savings in price. The only reason I can imagine changing to a different plug would be to extend their lives and avoid the labor costs of replacement. Since the cost of labor is way more than the cost of the standard plug.

I come from the old school American Made Chevy Hot Rods. Smooth Idle = More Effient Burn = More Power and Better Fuel Effiency.

Everyone likes power. Don't get me wrong, I have never had a smoother idle than my 260E. This baby of mine idles smooth as silk. I am very pleased with the car but there is that hot rodder in me that is always looking for that little extra horse power to squeeze out of a engine.

It is not like a major upgrade like a cam so I figure why not. I have ordered a set from Denso. Yes it is expensive to play with but curiosity got the best of me. The part number for the 2.6 engines are IT16. I have a eta of May 21st for the arrival of the plugs. I will keep everyone informed on how it works. Good or Bad. Hopefully good!

I use 'em in all my vehicles.
Put some in my 280e (M110) 5K mi. ago and they're still pristine white.
Car starts.
Hauls ass.
They work great.
I also have a plug cleaning machine.
Great for restoring fouled plugs.
Saves money and trips to the store when adjusting mix.

If your plug cleaner is of the sand blasting type, Bosch does not recommend using it on their plugs. They claim that the surface finish of the white porcelin is lost in cleaning causing a rougher surface which easily attracts surface impurities and fouling.
