96 SL600 Engine removal advice
I am starting to remove the engine and trans from my 96 SL600. I would like to remove the entire engine and trans as an assembly with all accesories AC, PS, Alt, Starter and exhaust manifolds attched.
Also does this transmission have a torque converter drain? Any suggestions, can this be done. John Roncallo |
I just replaced one a few weeks ago. It is so much easier to take the 30 minutes and drop the transmission out. Pull the radiator and intake-you will have to do that to get the wiring disconnected. Remove it with the exhaust manifolds. It isn't that bad of a job, just watch what you are doing.

I got everything underneath disconnected. I may also pull the center link as it looks like a point of interfearance. Since I dont have a transmission jack I'm going to attempt to take it out in one.
I dont understand why the intake manifilds have to come off. I removed all the engine covers and there seams to be only the wires going to the front that may cause trouble. It looks like all of the connectors will slip under the manifold with the exception of possibly the two water temp sensor connectors. If these give me trouble I may just remove the connector shells. Your thoughts? John Roncallo |

Not too bad...I guess you don't have to remove the intake. I still think it's easier to drop the trans out first, but if you don't have a lift or trans jack, maybe it's easier to do it as a group.

I'm kind of interested to know why you are removing the engine?
Are you undertaking an engine rebuild? |
no, he wants to put it in the back of a Fiero so he can keep up with mine. lol

I see that you've replaced the tan interior and replaced it with a black one. That must've been terribly expensive. |

Will it fit in the SL engine bay? Is the M120 basically two M104 engines joined together? If so, it would have an iron block and two aluminum heads. I guess it'd be heavier than your M117 engine. |

The M120 is an all alloy V-12 which I am hoping weighs about the same as an iron block 117 which the 107 originally came with. The engine and trans will be weighed upon removal, springs will be adjusted as required. John Roncallo |
