Upgrading alternators

Will I be able to replace a 1986 300E's 70 amp alternator with a 1992 400E's 110amp alternator without any major modifications?

I amthinking about replacing my viscous fan clutch with a Flex-a-lite electric fan and want the additional alternator capacity to run the electric fan.

Thanks.

Changing from the 70A(Al65X to the 80A(AL66X) is the most common & easiest change.

My alternator gave up and I need one to fix my car over the weekend. My local parts store has one in stock.

But I want to upgrade to an 80 amp alternator.

So, are there any distinguishing features between a 70 and 80 amp alternator. That way I can verify that I am buying the higher capacity one.

Thanks

Thanks to the posts in the following two threads, I was able to upgrade my alternator to a 143 amp unit from a 1997 S420. If one of you is ever going to swap out your 70Amp alternator, I would strongly suggest reading through these threads as there is a great deal of very good info:

I bought my used 143 Amp unit from Ptomac - http://mbpartsonline.com/
