Yes, the resistor looks like a coil. The temp sensor I'm speaking of is the blue one on the head. On the M103 engine it's located just under the air cleaner. My understanding of the fans is that they kick in a low speed, then a higher speed when warmer. Mine do just the opposite, so I assume I hooked something up backward. It doesn't make sense to me either. My mechanic said (when in for the head gasket) said the freon is fine.
I'm doing a road trip this afternoon, so I won't tear into it until the weekend...

Ok, all's clear.

On my car, have two coils (about 0.2 ohms) and a three (3) speed system. Two relays short the coils out for HIGH speed.

Yours is similar but just two speeds. You must have wired the resistor in backwards. So most likely, you need to reverse the wires going to the resistor.

If you suspect incorrect wiring from resistor change, simply jumper high pressure switch at drier w/ac on and you should have LOW speed fan.

Purposely do this with engine temp cool so you are not mis-diagnosing engine temp switch.

SUCCESS! After getting tired of that heating thing, I decided to see how hard the fans are to replace. Taking them out was pretty easy, and to discover that the drivers side fan was UNPLUGGED. I did the obvious, put them back together, and POOF---cooling. We drove the car around town that evening with the A/C on and it never got over halfway between 80 and 100 - about 90 I guess . I switched the wires coming off the drier, and it kicks in at 2 speeds. So, the problem is resolved. Thanks for ALL the suggestions and ideas.
I have totalled 2 cars in the last 1.5 years in hit/runs. I was driving on a two lane road, a semi passed going the opposite direction. A fairly sizeable rock or tool flew off and landed on my windshield. Glass landed in our laps (just small shards). After a moment of shock, we turned around and chased the truck...got all the numbers off of it and turned it over to insurance. The windshield is ruined as well as the trim above it. Just the luck...
