W140 overheating
Hi all,
Recently changed the wiring harness and now the engine overheats. Seems like the thermostat doesn't even open and was wondering if the temp sensors wires have orientations since they can be plugged either way. Any chance that the sensors have gone bad or the thermostat itself? Thanks. |

It always helps if you tell the list which model and the mileage.
Shade tree logic suggests that since the thermostat has no electrical connection (opens and closes based on coolant temperature ), it may be that the engine in not overheating, but your temperature gauge indicates that it is. The temperature gauge would be susceptible to failure to connect things correctly. If you google search automobile thermostat, you can learn how they work. Steve |

My bad, it's a 92 600 SEL with 110K on it. Well, it cannot be just the guage since the steam was coming out of everywhere. It seems like the thermostat is shut closed because the water in the container is cool. The temp keeps rising once the engine starts and it doesn't take long to go all the way up. The first time happened when I was on the freeway but I managed to drive home slowly wiht frequent stops. Thanks.

140 chassis overheating
The four pole temp sensor orientation is not critical, If it snaps all the way on it's good!
Steam all over the place on th other hand is NOT good. Go to your local parts house and get a block test kit and use as directed,If the test comes up positive for blown head gaskets you're in trouble! You might consider sending this job to a good shop as there is a lot at risk. Good luck Mike |

Then maybe it's simply a stuck thermostat. Get a new one, add some 50/50 coolant/water mix and try it.
On the other hand, you have a V12 mega-buck engine at risk. Maybe have it towed to a reliable shop rather than take a risk overheating again. Steve |
