I just bought an 87 300 SDL and am interested in installing a hard-wire hands free kit for my cell phone. I am interested in hearing from folks who have this type of set up, or have seen them to figure out where the best place is to but the speakers, etc.--

Thanks in Advance-

John

I have a nokia hands free set up in my car, (1989 560SEL). The microphone is above the sun visor, and the speaker is in the console, behind the sliding door, facing the back of the car. I can be heard, and can hear the calls well, (after muting the loud music from the CD player!) The phone is on the passenger side of the car, hanging next to the radio. Antenna is on the top of the rear windsheild, center.

I have a Nokia hands free kit and have a combined power antenna on the left rear quarter. The OEM radio antenna is exchanged for a power antenna for both radio and cell phone (Hirschmann). My microphone is mounted near the rear view mirror (original MB europe mount) and I have my cell phone cradle mounted on an original MB console with speaker.

I have build in a lot of hands free kits in the past and have mounted the microphones on the left A pillar, near the left sun visor or near the rear view mirror (depending on type of car and main usage). I have most of the speakers either under one of the dash panels (just above ventilation holes), behind the ashtray lid (in non-smoking cars) or under the passenger seat (if the speaker was not too high).

greetingz,

Well I really would have like to use my car's existing prewiring for the speakerphone, or atleast some of it, but could not.
I bought the $200 SprintPCS speakerphone for my 8500 and had it installed. Mic is above the visor, speaker is in the passenger footwell, and phone is mounted on the passenger side of the console. Installation costed me $120.
Overall, I love having a speakerphone and am happy with the setup. I tried wiring a second wire from the speakerphone speaker in the foot well to the existing in car speaker in the rear trunk lid. The ohms were rated differently, so the output is very minimal... oh well...
Also, I do not like the phone mounted in the car and where it is. It was the only place, so I guess I have to live with it. And it's very functional, but I don't like how it has to be drilled. I just wish there was a secre place it could go. But then again, I need it to be somewhere close by and within visibality to dial, etc.
I guess you can't have it all!
Overall, I love it though! I love not having to hold the stupid phone, can speak freely! ANd works great with voice-dialing!

For the W126 body the usual location is for the speaker to be placed near the right side footwell where it can't be seen. (Although I have seen the phone speaker placed behind the center console, under the rear passenger A/C grill, but this is not a good location if you normally ride with passengers who can knock out the speaker with the feet). The microphone is usually placed by the driver's A-pillar or near the rearview mirror stalk. If you place it near the rearview mirror stalk, be careful not to jam anything between the plastic trim piece and the windshiled glass. There is a risk of piercing the rubber seal between the windshiled and the plastic and end up with water and air leaks (the whistling can be annoying, the water is worse). The electronic box for the phone is usually placed under the front right passenger floor mat. The phone cradle should be located to the right of the console, with a mounting stem long enough to allow you to reach for the phone w/o having to take your eyes off the road. Some phones have provisions for a muting function to mute the car's radio when a call comes in (a real nice feature). Finally, I would suggest that you take the phone with you when you leave the car unattneded. Too much temptation for some thief to simply break your window, rip off your cell phone and make a bunch of calls before you realize your phone is missing. Good luck.
