A Mercedes dealership in New York lost our 99 service manual, and or screwed up and misplaced it with another car. Nevertheless we ended up with someone else's 1998 service manual, owners manual, (entire black pack). We are awaiting replacements, and in the mean time I've attempted to follow the 98 instructions for resetting the FSS in our 99 model, and nothing seems to make it reset. We have tried to reset it exactly as the 98 instructions direct, without success. We have tried it with the doors closed, doors open, going past the first position, using the first position, keeping the button pressed for 30 seconds, turning the key off and on during the process, calling a local Mercedes service center and hearing their babble that doesn't work (suggesting that we bring it in and they'll reset it), and we are fresh out of ideas.

So, does anyone have the 1999 Owners manual for the 230 SLK Kompressor, and if so can you recite the FSS Resetting instructions out of it verbatum?

Thanks!

Do a search if this doesn't work. This is off a 98 E430 (thanks bill!). There is other info in the search that might help.

Make sure your doors are closed.

1) Insert key into ignition and turn to position 2.

2) Within 4 seconds push button "0" and release.(this is the odometer reset button)

3) Within 10 seconds turn key to position 0.

4) Press and hold button "0" while turning the key back to position 2. Continue to hold button "0".

5) After approx 10 seconds a signal sounds and the display will show 10000 miles or 15000 km. Release the button.

99 SLK 230 FSS Reset - Does Not Work

David - Thanks for the attempt, but that procedure does not work for the 99 SLK 230. I tried it three times. Yes, I'm mechanically inclined - obviously, having changed the oil and filter today (which is why I'm trying to reset the FSS).

Does anyone have the owners manual for a 99 SLK 230? If so, please give me the details required to correct this FSS reset problem I'm having!

Thanks

Eh60,
OK, well that didn't work. I will get you directions from the 1999 S420, I would imagine they'd be the exact same. But in the meantime, do a search on FSS for subject only. There are 10 threads.

Here's my description, I can get a 99 SLK manual if I have to, though, we have shop copies: Turn key to "on" (yes, the door must be shut)push "0" button TWICE within a reasonable amount of seconds, the time or distance remaining (or over) will display. HOLD down the "0" button, turn the ignition off, then back on (position 2), then wait, the FSS should reset. I will try to follow up soon with the exact instructions per a 99 SLK manual......Gilly

Just to clarify, after you get the FSS display showing and you push the "0" button down, keep holding down the button while you turn the ignition on and off and continue to hold it down until the FSS resets......Gilly again

ooops, I meant to say "while you turn the ignition off and on".........

Ah, I got it a little wrong. Here's the instructions from a 99 SLK manual:
The counter can be reset by any individual. To do so:
1. Turn the key to position 2
2. Within 4 seconds press button (its the "0" button) twice.
3.The present status for days or distance is displayed. Within 10 seconds turn the key in steering lock to position 0.
4. Press and hold button ("0" button again) while turning key in steering lock to position 2 again. The present status for days or distance is displayed once more. Continue to hold button,
After approx. 10 seconds a signal sounds, and the display shows 10000 miles (Canada: 15000km)
5 Release button.
Hope this helps. I realized I had it wrong this morning after I did a service on a 99 E320. Yes, the doors have to be shut, so do this in the car with the doors closed.....Gilly

99 SLK 230 FSS Reset

Gentlemen,

We are still batting zero.

The symbology being displayed is the clock, wrench, and -242. I cannot reset it.

Hopefully My wife will be able to take it by MBS in Buford, Georgia tomorrow. Maybe they'll have some luck.

I appreciate all of your efforts!

Don

Don,

Hi, I am Donnie, you spoke to me on the phone yesterday. We are located in Duluth, Ga. You should call me again before she runs by and I'll be glad to help. IF I can't reset it with the standard method, I will connect my tester to it and do it there.

Thanks

The shop you are coming to is in NO WAY affiliated with MercedesShop. I started Mercedesshop and Bill and I are building the new shop in the Suwanee/Sugar Hill area. The name of it is MB Autowerks. You can see the progress at http://www.MBAutowerks.com.

99 SLK 230 FSS Reset

Donnie,

Your shop comes highly recommended in the Atlanta market, and I can now see why. My wife will pay you a visit in the morning around 1100-1200 in the morning.

Thanks!

Don

Glad to have been of service!

99 SLK 230 FSS Reset

With the swiftness of a cheetah, and the skill of a surgeon, Donnie slipped into the seat today and managed to reset the FSS within 20 seconds. He did it so quickly I felt inept, quite silly, and too ashamed to ask him to walk me through it slowly.

I guess I should stick to flying helicopters, and let the trained professionals like Donnie handle the complicated trickery of decrypting the Mercedes logic.

Thanks again Donnie! I'll certainly bring my heavy work to you and yours from now on.

Don

Thanks for that! I need it from time to time.
Donnie
