Am only getting 28mpg on my 99 diesel. Figured I would get at least 30mpg, I got 34 on my 90 300D, but that had 5 cylinders I know. I have 22K on my (new to me 3 months ago) 99 diesel. What can I do if anything to improve my mpg?

Well, you're in the neighborhood. I know the '98 diesel
was rated at 26 city/34 highway - you are in between those two figures. I don't necessarily see a problem. How do you use the car? Short trips, long trips, city, highway, suburban? This all makes a difference. Try using EC/economy mode on the climate control - that's good for 1-2MPG. I have a '98 turbodiesel. I see 25-30MPG in mixed suburban use. Lower figure for lots of stop&go with the air conditioner blasting, higher figure if I make a few trips to the airport. Road trips have netted 32-34MPG. Not up to spec, but I need to note that I generally drive in the vicinity of 80MPH on the open road. (No flames, I'm in Texas and things are way far apart.) |
I thought you were getting 99 mpg with your diesel.

Jim,
Thats what I thought too from the subject line. Dan, I saw your post in MBCA.org last night/this morning. I made a reply there. |
re:99 E300TD mileage
Bought 1999 E300TD 11/98. I have gotten 31 mpg only once on trip from Texas to FL. Usually get max of 30 on Hwy and around 25 in city/freeway driving. Using a/c doesn't seem to affect mileage. Have 17,000 miles on it. Seems to run great. I have heard others get better, but most are 25-30 range.
