Suspension parts. What do you look for to determine condition?

I hope this question doesn't fall in the realm of "stupid questions", but, here goes. What do you look for when visually checking suspension parts for possible replacement? Is it "tight fitting vs wiggle"? Cracked or split rubber boots? I'm kinda up in the air on this area. Need help. Thanks.

It's kinda all, and a little of all the above. Depends also whether you are talking about front end or rear. Mabye some more info on your problem would help. Also include handling characteristics.

My question is more a general question regarding front and rear suspension to include steering components. Handling on my 92 300E is fine - tracks straight and true - but, does need shocks which will be replaced soon.
There is one item in particular, though, and that is the steering shock. Grabbing it by hand I can wiggle it(rotate it a half inch or so) in place. Is this normal?

yeah, that's normal(to be able to rotate it a bit). Steering shocks, I normally replace every 60,000 to 70,000m. very cheap (about $35) and very easy.

John, I think that you have a very smart question ,I would like to hear from the pro's about pin pointing supension problems.(I'm sure there are many threads)as the suspension on my 81 SD appears quiet more complicated than the american cars I grew up working on.

Yeah, good question. I think I might need new rear shocks.. car handles fine. But the rear has about one inch from the tire to the well, and in front, there is about 2 1/2 inches. You'd never know unless you were paying close attention.

You need to find the right "tool" for examining the bushings on the suspensuion. I have watched "pros" check for play in the suspension. You need something that will fit in the area that you are checking. Your hands will do for checking play in the tie rod ends, but you will need a lever such as a small pry bar or a large screwdriver to examine bushings. You must determine what will fit to move the part that you are examining, and excessive wear will be obvious. Rubber bushings will have some play but will generally be tight,
