Neutral Safety Switch Location
 

I have a 1994 C280 and am changing the Neutral Safety switch. I have the center consol out and looking at the shifter but That's as far as Iv'e gotten. I think it located on the right side of the shifter but can't see it. Any help would be great.

Changed out the switch and now the car won't start. I think I didn't line something up. It pops out of Low Gear (2nd) and when I put it in park the key won't come out. I think the car thinks it's in reverse. Is there a certain way the switch should be in when it's installed?

The arm on the NSS has a pin that has to line up with the lever hole that the pin fits into...

Then the whole NSS can be turned for final adjustment before tightening the mounting bolts [ oblong holes here to allow for adjustment]

Thanks again for tye help. Went out, removed the switch and lined up the notch like you said and reinstalled it. Car started right up.
Now the only problem is the key won't come out of the ignition when the car is in park and the engine is turned off. Any ideas on that one ?

The switch is not adjusted properly, not allowing the lever to fully engage park.

Disconnect the shifter cable from the shift lever on the transmission, loosen the two bolts on the switch, push the selector lever on the transmission to the rear of the car, park position, and now push two positions foreword, which should be neutral. Leave the steel lever connected to the switch



The selector lever has a hole (A), rotate the switch housing until hole (B) is directly behind hole (A), and it’s possible to insert a 4mm drill bit shank through hole A and B in the switch when the selector lever is in “N” position. Tighten the bolts and you’re done.

I would look at the shifter bushng where the rod from the NSS meets the shifter. These are a common wear item and that will cause your problem.

reviving a thread!

I ordered a NSS for my 95 E320 and am going to install it Monday hopefully. I'm glad to see the install process is fairly straight forward as far as just making sure those holes line up. when removing the old one, does the car need to be in any particular gear (N maybe)? do I have to remove or disconnect any other components or just head straight for the switch?

The wire harness connector has a white lock Ring on it. This just has to be turned to the unlock position to allow the connector to unplug.
Simple, but if you do not know that, then you can ruin the connector..
I have seen guys bust them right off.

Yep, and the twist lock is the OPPOSITE of "clockwise to tighten".

That is, "clockwise" to unlock, "counter-clockwise" to lock.
