A more specific oil thread. Any Amsoil users?
 

Yes, another oil thread but I'm trying to be more specific with this one. Do any of you use Amsoil products and if so, which one(s) and in what vehicle(s). I have been using them exclusively since 1987 but would like to hear from other users whether satisfied or not.

Using Amsoil in all my cars
 

I have been using Amsoil in all of my cars for several years and am quite happy with it. I run it 6 -7K usually, so with four cars -- oil changes don't come too often.... Ben Carter

It's a recommendation from a friend in the BMW e46forum. I recently switch from Valvoline (20W-50) to Amsoil (10W-40):D. I also change from BMW Castro oil to Amsoil for my 330Ci-heavily mod supercharge.:)

I love Amsoil !!! It's an awesome product :thumbsup: and will continue to use Amsoil on all of my cars (VW and Honda). It's expensive but good product.

What specific evidence do you have of Amsoil being so "...awesome..."?

Not breaking your balls, just curious. I run Rotella in my CD and Mobil 1 in my 400E. Any proof of Amsoil being a superior oil might get me to switch.

Buy some and try it. Be polite on the forum! AH!!!

have for about 20 years. Engine oil, trans fluid, gear lube, grease, air and oil filters... I have followed the recommendations set forth by Amsoil which are generally 1 change per year or 25K, whichever comes first. Probably my best story involving it's use is from the 1990 300E. At purchase it had 123K and used some oil (maybe 1Q in 2000 mi.). I switched to Amsoil and the oil consumption immediately started getting worse. 2000, 1800, 1500, 1100 miles... Then it stopped using oil. Now I change every 10K or so per their recommendations and it is using 1Q every 5K on average. I usually change when it's time to add the 2nd quart.
The thing that gets me the most is the fact that the average car owner is still stuck in the old 3000 mile change interval that has been around since the 60's. We now have 100,000 mile tuneups, 100,000 mile spark plugs, 80,000 mile tires, 500,000 mile engines and as a rule everything on cars lasts longer than back then. Why are we still married to the 3K oil change, especially when the mfr recommends intervals from 5K to 10K and up? I know, it doesn't hurt to be conservative but with everything else in the industry having been improved drastically over the last 40 years, doesn't it stand to reason that oil has been too? Dino oil is improved also, I might add.
Anyway, not a salesman or anything, just a satisfied, long-term user.

So you may like their oil.
Just stay away from the other products.
Good friend of mine ruined 2 expensive engines because of Amsoil's mis-engineered by-pass filters.
He wanted " The Best " for his baby! ;)
They even admitted fault & offered him a case of the " New Improved " versions.
While this has nothing to do with their oil, it sure left him with a bitter taste in his mouth, as far as Amsoil goes.

Thanks for the tip, Manny. I've read about their bypass filters but they don't make economic sense to me. Why spend a couple hundred on a system and $30ish on a filter element every so often, then pay $20-$30 to have your oil analyzed to save $30 on oil? Maybe to save 12-15 gallons in a big truck but not 5-6 quarts in a passenger vehicle. Guess that could be lucky for me that I didn't do it....Do love their oils though. To be fair, I've never tried any other synthetic but Amsoil has such a wide selection and it's comparable in price and has been good to me so far.

Intresting thread here. I saw Amsoil many years ago at a antique automobile Association concours. I haven't tried it in my 1992 300-E I don't even know were to buy it? The reason for my post is I purchased a very expensive oil filter for my 1987 Ford Mustang 5.0. www.trufilter.com. I would appreciate if I can get some feed back on this system for our devoted techs.
I purchased it through Performance parts in Van Nuys California. So it must have some merit or I dought they would carry it.

good oil if you read all the prop... err sales literature but then again there are many specialty oils out there with great performance.. royal purple or redline to name a couple. Is it worth the hassle and the extra price to buy amsoil from a specialty dealer vs mobile one or castrol at walmart? What do you hope to gain.. longer engine life? By how many years/miles.... 1, 2, 5? Do you really think it makes that much of a difference? Maybe its like tap water vs bottled water? Which is better? Will one make you live longer? Change the air filter and spark plugs more often for a bigger bang for your buck. One quality oil vs another is splitting hairs.

FWIW I have used castrol dino juice in my race motors exclusively with no issue. Those guys who use mobile one sythetic arent putting down anymore power or getting any more longevity than me.

I use mobile one in my c43 just because thats what it came with.


IMO spend your money on a high quality filter! Use any oil and change is as needed based on driving style.

As for the stainless, mesh-type filter, I would think it'd be a pain to clean it properly ?
But, not having first-hand experience with it, I reserve judgement on them.

Amsoil experience
 

I've used both Amsoil and Mobil-1 in various cars. Both oils have resulted in much less oil burning and the oils do not get thick when they near the 3000 mile mark like cy former oil does (Havoline). I can't really say I see a difference between these oils in real time use. I like them both but the M-1 is less expensive.

There is a web site report where they took both brands of oil and ran them for extended mileages. As I recall they ran the oil for around 15,000 miles. Filters were regularly changed and oil replaced if it was used up. They did periodic samples of the oil and sent these to a lab for analysis. The analysis measured the metal wear products, corrosive combustion products, oil viscosity, and other oil characteristics. It was a pretty scientific study.

Both oils maintained protection for the engine over then span of the test very well. The only negative that I recall was that Amsoil tended to have a viscosity increase toward the end of the test. The M-1 viscosity was pretty steady.

From this test I can see that extended oil changes, in an engine in good repair, are not harmful to the engine. I still change my synthetic oil at 6000 mile intervals but I probably could go longer. It's comforting to know that if I have to delay changing the oil, the engine will not be hurt. That is why I put M-1 in my daughter's car. It's hard to get her to bring the car into town for servicing.
