What is a Centrifugal governor?

Hi Merc People!

I have a couple of questions.

What is a Centrugal governor in relation to an automatic gearbox? What is its purpose and what happens if one fails or is failing?
Also what is the TRANSMISSION OVERLOAD PROTECTOR switch? Again, what is its purpose and what would be the symptoms if its failing or failed?

Would really appreciate any information...

Thanks

Posting the year & model in question really helps!

The auto trans governor on MB transmissions allows changes in opposing hydraulic pressures to make sure that the trans isn't OVERLOADED with torque from the engine. There is working pressure, modulator pressure, governor pressure, & control pressure on MOST MB automatics upto 1996.

Trans overload switch is just that. a signal that allows the engine to develop LESS torque so that the trans won't take as much punishment during shifts.

Hi MB doc,

Many thanks for the reply...the car is a 190E 2.5-16 1990, and this is on behalf of a friend of mine...
The problem is that on full throttle or kickdown there is a kangarooing effect, in other words it lunges back and forth...Its difficult to explain...Call it a jerking effect, its like the power is cutting in then out, in then out...This causes it to jerk...The revs go up and down, up and down...If i let go of the throttle its ok...
Sometimes its fine...But most of the time it displays this problem...
I have been told its the governor for sure...but now i was told it could be the switch?
Any ideas please!
Many thanks

PS: How easy are either to change?

Governator

Sounds like the bowden cable is adjusted too tight or the fuel pump relay is defective causing the engine to hit RPM limit.

what rpm does that happen? if ithat is a high rpm then possibly the fuel pump relay is the cause as it also controls kickdown.

Well it happens above 3,000 rpm...
I retarted the ignition by turning the EZL-ECE dial from 'S' to 'N'...
Problem goes away after i do this...put it back to 'S' problem comes back...

My fuel pump relay is new :)
