Sheesh! What's with people these days?! I'm certain I speak for several members of this board when I say your advice is greatly appreciated and highly regarded. Like you said, we all have opinions and they will (of course) differ among members. Some people choose to use the Topsider, others do not...just as some drive Mercedes and others don't.
I don't understand how someone would be offended by simple advice. I always thought a message board was a place to exchange advice, experiences and opinions. On a board like this, one would only assume people could keep things on a professional level. I hope this remains true. As far as pedaling parts, Mercedesshop offers parts cheaper than most dealers, so why not spread the word. I for one was happy to be informed of their offerings. BTW: What's the Roy Fields site anyway?

I don't know you from Adam, however, you seem like a gentleman. I have run across another post in which you felt attacked and withdrew from MS. This gives me pause for concern. It is a given that anyone who's posts are here is opinionated. If not, why bother posting! Apart from that self assured, my-way-is-better attitude we probably all share, there should be a concerted effort to be unoffensive and civil. I have said this before about another member who I felt was just being plain rude. That kind of behavior is not welcome or humorous and I will speak against it at any time! You sir have not acted that way IMHO. Don't apologize, just be Larry... BTW Scott, that extractor of yours is nice and clean, maybe I'm not changing my diesel oil often enough

Well, I've kept out of this topic for long enough. Larry, don't let 'em get you down. I might not always agree with you or anyone else, but that doesn't make abuse acceptable.
As for topsider vs. drain: I own a Tempo Oil Boy extractor (www.tempoproducts.com/pumps.html). I've had it for over a year. I have a very good friend that works for Travis Boats (www.travisboats.com), and when I was looking for a Topsider, he came up with this alternative, and I bought it. It was about $35. This is NOT to take away from the folks here at Mercedesshop, I use them and if they had had the Topsider available I'd have bought it from them. It takes 10 pumps to drain the oil. Holds over 5 quarts. I have never had a problem using it with blazing hot oil. Just to make sure, I contacted their technical folks yesterday and they reasurred me that HOT oil was no problem. As for the difference. When I do an oil change, I drain all the oil I can while hot. Then I wait about 30-60 minutes and suck up some more. Then I wait until the next morning, and get the last bit (usually less than a tablespoon on our 300E. I unscrewed the drain plug once and found much less than a teaspoon still in there. Just my 2 cents - hang in there Larry!

Well, the second time i used the topsider, it just collapesed some more. It still works, it just doesnt hold as much I guess. Its not worth the time and hassle to send it back and get an exchange. Its a tool, as long as it works, I could care less about the dent. I was just a little dissapointed when I pump it and it pops on me, lol.
Maybe I need to get some of those dent wizard tools and massage the dent out eh? LOL To Larry Bible, Im sorry to see these problems. I have read many of your replies while doing searches and appreciate the recent post on the mono valve on my 84 300D. Your replies are good and I like them. I also read the Nascar posts. There are going to be people like this out there, dont let them get you down. I have my own opinions on MB's as well, sometimes people agree with me and sometimes they dont. Keep on posting. BTW, if you continue to have these problems, change your username and make something like "mbdude" or something generic. |

You using the "Top Sider" should not be amazed if the vessel collapses, after all it has 29.9 psi, or some pressure close to that on the surface of the vessel. There is an alternate method of Top Sideing and that is to use a electric driven mechanical oil pump. For the DIY owners, this gadget can be assembled for less than $25.00 and it out performes the suck pumps many times over. I do not think using the electric pump is as clean and as convenient as using the Topsider.
Use the hanging method, you can finish the job and pack the Topsider away without a drop of motor oil on the floor. It will be hard to do with a small electrical pump because both ends of the pump are open and oil is still inside the pump when done. If the electrical pump is small, you may have to baby sit it: holding it and wail until it is done and turn the power off. With the Topsider, you just pump it and walk away to do something else. I used to keep putting off changing motor oil and filters. But with the Topsider now, oil change is usually on schedule. David |

Someone posting there anonymously has a serious attitude problem as concerns this website in general...
They allege that: 1. This site is only here to sell parts... 2. The techs here aren't certified, and one has been specifially "de-certified" by MB. 3. Anyone posting links here to other sites that also sell parts gets flamed immediately. 4. Anyone posting here gets spammed, because people regularly copy member's email addresses and sell them to spammers. 5. When you post here you will get several intentionally misleading answers to your question intended to confuse you. Now, we all know what a barge-load of Bravo Sierra this all is, but I don't want Larry to think he was just singled out for abuse. This pathetic idiot, who very well may be reading this very posting, hates us all. Go there and see for yourselves, and also see just how many of our regular contributors are on that site by name, as well as who they are...

I always changed my oil by pulling the drain plug. While the oil is draining I check everything else that is on the underside of the car. If you MBZ is like mine nad it has the plastic panels on the underside, without changing the oil by traditional methods, I would probably never have an oppurtunity to inspect the underside of the car. Finding a potential problem or a problem in the early stages VS. finding out about a problem when it is too late, is definately worth getting dirty for. In reality, I get a few drops of oil on my fingers and that is bout it.

It's amazing the different approaches to something so simple as pumping the sump of your Benz. The remarks are well intended to help others. The Sterile approach, to the I don't think it will, having never tried it. My El Cheapo SumpPump uses a 12v.d.c. oil pump purchased from J.C. Whitney via mail order. It cost $12.95 6-7 years ago but now it costs $19.95. The container is a Gott 2 1/2 gallon gas can with the carrying handle at the top. This is where I mounted the pump handle, forced it into the hand hold of the can handle. The pump dischage tube is inserted into the can vent hole. I've used re-inforced tygon tubing and have yet to have a problem with warm to hot oil effecting the tubing. Your total cost would be approximatly $30.00. As for getting your little pinkies soiled, never happen. And you can change oil a couple of times before taking the can full to a recycle place.
