Audible (rubbing?) noise when hard cornering to the left
Good afternoon! I could not find anything on this subject (if there are already posts, please point me in the right direction), but my 1996 S420 w/ 135,000 miles is making a funny noise when I corner hard to the left (i.e. turning left while accelerating and/or moving fast). The noise does not show up when turning to the right (hard or otherwise). It seems like the sound is coming from the front passenger side (which makes sense, the stress on the suspension/tires etc. would be on the passenger side when turning the vehicle left). The noise does not appear to be there when turning left at parking lot speeds or regular turns from a stop sign/light etc. Has anyone encountered this and if so, how were you able to fix it (or what was the case/fix)? Likewise, I do my own maintenance on my S420 and look forward to contributing where I can to the forum. Thank you so much. All Best Wishes, Steve |

I repacked both sets of wheel bearings in the front with grease and rechecked the tensioning nut on the outside of the hub. They seem to be fine, and the bearings, aside from being dry, seemed to be in good shape. The noise is still present. The plastic housing on top of the engine holding the 2 air cleaners has broken mounts (i.e. I can lift the whole thing off by hand without having to unbolt anything) and there is more play on the passenger side than the driver's side. Could this be rubbing against something transferring engine noise?
To repeat, the noise occurs when turning left at around 40 MPH (making a hard left turn). The noise is kind of a moaning/groaning noise (sounds like really noisy 4x4 tires almost). The noise is not consistent either. When it occurs, it will unevenly sound and then dissapear as soon as I straighten out. Any idea...please???:) Thanks. |

Check the right side engine mount. It may have failed, causing the engine to rub as you shift the centre of gravity over to the right while cornering left.

Slight update...
In an empty parking lot, I could repeat the noise and found that a sharp left turn (steering wheel turned almost to the lock to the left, but not quite, making a very sharp turn) at 20 MPH replicated the noise. A colleague of mine was along and said it sounded more like a tire rubbing against something. Possibly a bad shock and/or spring?
I'm confused! lol |

My W202 C220 also has that odd sound.... My guess was the spring insulation rubber that's displaced from where it should have sat (the sound also comes up if I drive over rough terrain at very slow speeds)
I have a set of Vogtland GT suspension coming in that should cure the problem. Gotta love ebay. |

Thank you all for the suggestions. It may be something in the steering (except I have recirculating ball type rather than rack and pinion, but there might still be something suspect in there). My 2 front shocks are leaking, so they're probably due for replacement. Next chance I'll get to tear into it will be the weekend (or if my blood is boiling enough, I may end up finding an indy suspension shop that works on MBZ before that). Thank you all again for the help and suggestions. I will update this post with what I find out (hopefully the solution!). SRS |
