I have a weird problem on my 83' 300 SD.
I get in the car start it up and volia, oil pressure measures 3 on the gauge looks perfect but once the car get heated up after a matter of 3- 5 minutes the gauge is no longer working just sitting on zero and at times when I take off from a stop sign lets say my gauge might jump up a little bit.
does anybody have any idea what might be the problem and how I could fix it.
I know its not an actual pressure problem I've drove 2000 miles with the gauge like that.

thanks guys

Sounds to me like it could be either a failing gauge, a loose wire, a faulty sensor, or a faulty sending unit if the car has plenty of power and is running fine otherwise and does have proper pressure.

You should have it checked out to verify it is not an oil pressure problem, you don't want to drive without any oil pressure.

When you are at idle, it should be reading around 2 I think, when you accellerate it should go to 3 and stay there while you are driving. but at a stop it is normal for the gauge to drop a little bit.

I'm not a tech, but from what I have read on this site over the last several months, it sounds like one of those items could be it.

You should check the oil pressure with another guage. If that guage reads same as you dash guage, you might have a bad oil pump or a very worn engine, either of which will cause low oil pressure.
What weight oil are you using? Changing to a higher viscosity oil might help.

I experiences this same situation sometime. My oil pressure only reads 1.0 on the bar, ...car is not overheating. I did replace the oil pressure sensor next to the oil filter and it did correct the problem. Now it reads 2.5 at idle and 3.0 during acceleration. Hope this helps......
