W210 - my car will not start!
 

Hi, I have a 99 W210 E430 with 130k miles. The car will not start. The electronic key goes in and you hear all the clicks, the instrument panel light come on and the key turns all the way to starting position but the engine will not crank. I tried a different key with same results. I do not think is the car battery; it is less than a year old and has lots of cranking power. Any ideas?

Fisrt try starting with shifter in N rather thn park.

Second, confirm the battery isnt the problem.

Hook your diesels battery up with jumper cables and see if that helps.

I am having the same problem with starting the car, does anyone know what to do on this case? The spare key that does not have an IR transmiter can start the car no problem but then half of the power options are disabled.

Clean the IR windows first, also check the batteries in your remote. Finally, get your wallet out and say goodbye to lots of money for a new ignition barrel.

In the 1999 model, the remote batteries have no purpose ither than powering the remote with respect to the power door lock functions. The EIS (electonic ignition switch) does not use any power from the remote. So, changing the batteries will have no effect on a no-start condition.

To begin, try the other keys, including the flat key. If none of the keys work, then you are probably looking at a faulty EIS or other problem. If one of the other keys works, try the failing key again, and if it still does not work, you need a new key.

Other possibilities, if nothing works, include a bad starter.

I would start by load testing the battery.

My 98 E300 would occasionally fail to start. Everything would work, but the starter would not turn. The first couple of times the engine started after letting it rest an hour or two. I checked a number of items, but I figured it out when I took a long rod and a hammer and tapped the starter. Then it started normally. There are a number of things that can cause a no start condition, but mine turned out to simply be a worn out starter solenoid or severely worn brushes. I replaced the starter, and that cured it. One crude test is to see if your lights burn brightly and your horn is loud. If so, you are getting good current flow (at least to some circuits), and the starter may be the problem.
