The Benz ahs a four spped automatic transmission and won't shift up to fourth gear. At 70 mph The rpm's are around 3300. Other than that the tranny works great.
Yes, I have checked the fluid. The level is fine, the color is good, and it doesn't smell burnt. What do you think it could be? |

I had this problem last winter at anything below -10C. It went away after about 20 minutes on the highway. It turned out (in my case) to be early winter moisture freezing the vacuum modulator valve. It persisted all winter because I couldn't get the moisture out until I just let the car sit and run for an hour in the driveway. The heat did it. In any case, the modulator is the first place I'd look. Clearance problems within the valve are well known to MB, and they can stick with age. They have service bulletins about that.

Um, 3300 at 70 seems about right. Are you sure you aren't just counting the 2 shifts from rest and assuming you aren't reaching 4th? MB transmissions start in 2nd gear unless pushed hard off the start. Use your shift lever, start in the lowest position, push it fairly hard from the start, shift manually until you are in drive and count the shifts on the way up. You may find that it's 1st gear you haven't been seeing, not 4th.
In 3rd gear on the highway, your engine would be screaming at 70 |
