W202 C220 waterpump - when is the change interval
hey guys, just planning ahead for my Merc as I use it for daily commute and miles rack up rather quick - what is the factory manual's interval for waterpump inspection and possibly replacement? Currently the coolant temp has zero issue whatsoever but it is hammering on its 212th thousand km on the road (with some unknown miles travelled while the OVP was faulty) and with my experience with other cars if it's still on its first waterpump it's about time suddenly the water temp will just climb up and steam will be coming from under the hood... I want to have the part at hand when the designated miles come and order accordingly. |
My C220 has 250000km on it and i'm on my third water pump. You've had great luck with yours, and from personal experience, I would just use it till signs of it needing to be changed become obvious. You'll have enough warning of when it needs to be changed, till then if it ain't broke, why fix it?

How long is a piece of string? There is no way to know when it will start to go. My own C230 is at 209,000kms and I'm not bothering to think about the water pump. I've got a 190E with 509K on it with the original water pump, but I know people that replaced them prior to 200K. No definite failure point...

when its not broken to bother it, just do the usual periodic preventive mentainance.

Some cars with timing belts that have the water pump driven by the belt (many Hondas) it is prudent to change the pump when you change the belt.
MB engines are quite different in that they al have chains, the water pump is driven by the accessory belt, and has no need to be changed along with other compentents. Change it when it begins to leak or squeal, as that means it is on the way out. |

Ive just developed a new problem with my C230K 1999. Now, being very cold here in Canada, im thinking its just the cold making the car make noises. But, when its parked (outside only) for a good 8hr stretch in -15 temps, there is some squealing/screeching strain coming from somewhere in the engine area. Its not loud but its there. You need to turn off the radio to hear it! But, it has never done this before and im at 101,000kms.

One trick for water pump longevity is to use the proper MB antifreeze, or Zerex G-05, which is the same thing. It keeps the ph of the antifreeze proper so it does not corrode.
I pulled the pump out of my 87 300SDL when it was overheating, and the pump impellers were badly rusted and the volutes of the aluminum pump cover were also badly corroded. The right antifreeze prevents this. Gerry |

Ok, replaced water pump this afternoon. Wasn't too bad of a job.
Here's what i did..... - Got spanner wrench from AZ (part no 27018). see pictures. Use AZ wrench tool to remove fan clutch off water pump pulley. AZ rents them for $25 deposit refundable if returned in 90 days. - Loosen fan nut using the small 36 mm and 47 mm spanner wrench (see picture on how the large wrench is used). Nut is unscrewed in clockwise direction. Fully uncrew fan nut and lift up and remove. - After removing fan, remove Fan shroud. After removing fan shroud, you will now notice you have lots of room to work on the pump. - Remove fan belt (turn tensioner CCW) to remove belt. - Remove fan pulley by loosening the 4 - 5mm allen-head screws. Use the large spanner wrench to hold the pulley down while loosening each screw. Be careful when turning each allen screw. Allen wrench must be seated securely on the allen screw head when turning (I kinda messed up one of the aallen screw heads. Turned out Home Depot had them (M6 X 12mm) so I replace them all. Also used tension washers rather than flat ones. - Loosen and remove all 4 screws of pulley and remove pulley. Keep all screws in secure place . - Removing the pulley exposes the front of the water pump. - Before removing the water pump, I cleaned the front of the engine by spraying degreaser all over the front of the engine and pressure washed it. After cleaning the engine, using a Sharpie, I marked each water pump bolt so I remember which bolt-hole to return them to. They are different lengths so its important to do this. The pump is hel by 8 hex bolts (2-13mm & 6-10mm). - I proceeded to loosen and remove all bolts and pulled the pump and gasket out. - Detached hoses off the pump.
