Sorry about that. Convert from hydraulic to standard.

just take out the old hydraulic strut, drain all the hydraulic fluid from the line, and seal off the line from the canister container of the hydraulic fluid, then replace with ordinary shocks.

Why not fix the system

I dont remember if the 560 had a tandem pump with power steering like the 140 body does. You might have to loop it back since the fluid flows all the time. The hydraulic struts also help raise the rear of the car due to the residual pressure in the system, so it will sit lower, different springs or pads. I f the struts dont leak, it is probably bad accumulators, the pump and the control vale are the only moving items

You can block off the system where the pipe from the shock attaches to the accumulators, then lock the levelling valve in the fully raised/no load position.
Then, as previosly stated, use conventional shocks/springs.

your right peter, question john, why do you want to change to the normal strut? was it because of the cost of the parts you need to change? with your current system, you'll definitely get a better ride, but if you decide to convert it to the ordinary strut, right won't be that bad still. and cost of maintenance will definitely be less.

suspension conversion

Confession; I lied. Really have 6.9 and want to make conversion but have been unable to find anyone that has actually done the job. Here, i assume the the systems are similar. For anyone that wants to keep these cars and use them, over the long haul the hydro system has to go. The parts will bankrupt you and moreover the ride is too soft.

jhodg5ck 02-19-2007 11:51 AM

Umm...your 6.9 is full hydromat, no?

In which case swapping out to conventional suspension is going to be Huge.

I'm not even certain if the conventional springs/shocks will drop in....

As an aside, when ever changing a 126 w/ SLS out to conventional you really should remove the pump and you Must put in non SLS rear springs...otherwise the rear will ride horribly low.

The job has been done by some but have been unable to find anyone that has done work so as to get first hand knowledge and feedback, alot of dead ends. Particularly annoying when people on site dont answer the question asked. There is/was shop in Aus. that alledgedly sold a kit but have been unable to track them down. AMG offered an option back in those days where they would replace only the rear hydro set up. For anyone interested in keeping the car and intending to use it, the $ savings would be huge.
