timing chain price 500 sel

Just got a quote for a timing chain replacement at a independent dealer for $1000.00. Is this about right? Anyone know of any independent dealers in the tidewater va. area or the Raleigh N.C. area? Thanks. I have 125.000 miles and am concerned about the timing chain. Thanks in advance.

It's a little high but not totally out of range. Make sure they replace not only the chain, but the tensioner and all of the upper guide rails included in that price. I think a more typical price for the job might be around $800 as it is only about 4-5 hours labor for an experienced tech to do this job plus parts which run about $250-$300. Most charge book time which is probably an hour to two more.

A local MB specialist here told me around $500 for my 1985 380SE.

That would be very cheap...the parts alone to do the job right would cost them $200+ so it sounds like maybe they would only be doing the chain and maybe the guides but not the tensioner for that price.
