Replaced Shift Bushings - Gear Shifter still indicates between D and N

I just changed the Shift Bushings on my 1994 E320. Had to buy them from the dealer, FastLane had the wrong parts.

Problem:
The gear shift lever still indicates between the "D" and "N" while in Drive. I can push the lever over to the "D" position, but it springs back to the in-between position.

Question:
1. Does the shift rod require adjusting? I hate to try any adjustments associated with the transmission before consulting with the experts.

2. What could cause this condition?

Thanks,
John

What was the condition of the old bushings?

The shift lever was normal until one day it wouldn't stay put?

I would probably check your work and make sure all is well underneath.

They were non-existent... Metal on metal. Now they have been replaced.
