I took a '92 400E for a test drive today. Nice car, very solid (85K miles on it) powerful too. After about two minutes of driving a strange chime/beep was coming from behind the instrument cluster. It lasted for about 25 sec. A couple of minutes later it was heard again. The dealer knows nothing about it. Anybody experienced this before? Thanks for your input. By the way, liked the car but the dealer is a dreamer.

My 95 C280 makes 2 noises or warning sounds.

The first being the buzzer. Lights are on (or key in position 1) and door is open, and the seatbelt reminder.

The second being a beeping sound (same warning tone on all newer Mercedes in lieu of buzzer too). Meaning parking brake is applied and the car is going more than 3 mph.

Maybe it thought the parking brake was on if it was that beeping? But I would think that the Brake Light (dash reminder) would have also been on. But I'm also not sure if a 92 E had that same tone or parking brake reminder, or if that's the same tone you heard.

A failing fuse can make an intermittent beep noise in the instrument cluster, as can the AC. With the fuse, a slight crack in the conductor can cause power to the instruments to 'cycle' at a rate that depends on the seriousness of the crack. Replace the fuse is the cure, if this is the noise source. If it doesn't do it when the AC is off, then a good tech can tell you the component in the AC that occasionally makes this prolonged noise.

buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

The buzzer relay. Is what your hearing. Make sure the door
switches drivers and passenger doors are ok open the door look inside the door jams. See if they plunge in and out easily/make sure there not broken. If there ok/ the warning buzzer/chime relay if fauly. The solenoid contact in the relay stick some times. Remember a relay is just another switch that can carry a higher load.
This should fix this complaint.
