Temp Sending Unit Wiring

The wire going to the temp sending unit for the gauge are badly frayed. It has fell out of the little plastic connector and my gauge is dead. How do I go about repairing the wiring, and, since the housing is coming off anyway this week for thermostat replacement, should I replace the sending unit, too?
Thanks, and God Bless,
Dave.

Check the sender values before replacing
It is a Negative thermistor.

OHM 110 = 60C
67 = 80C
38 = 100C

Well, Mr. Dalton, the one thing that I just don't really understand well about a car is the electrical system. I have a voltmeter, just have a hard time trying to figure out using it. I understand mechanical work and fairly well comprehend hydraulics, but electricals blow my mind. I would be ever so grateful if you could break it down for me how to test the sender.
Thank you and God Bless,
Dave.

Set the meter to OHMS scale
The chart shows what the ohms value will be at the indicated temp in the chart.
The leads of the meter will be Red to sender teminal and Blk to engine ground.
