BAS/ESP Light and no Brakes!
Help! I backed out of my garage last night and when I put my foot on the brake pedal the BAS/ESP light came on. I had my wife check the brake lights and they (all three) are not working. When I restart the car everything is fine until I touch the brake pedal. Has someone else experienced this problem....maybe the stop switch at the brake pedal?
Thanks in advance, Dave

if you are not even qualify to answer your type of question, I don't see how you will be capable to resolve your break problem, (your not a handyman) send it to a garage who may be knowledgeable, your life behind the wheel depends on your brakes. Stay safe.

Well, I reset the original brake stop switch and everything works okay. I went to the dealership and purchased a new brake stop switch ($15.00) and installed it just to be sure. I just wanted an opinion from this forum in case someone else had experienced this problem. Why would you say I'm not a handyman? My '71 Corvette and '93 MB 190E have never been in a shop. Didn't you read my post...I already thought it might be the brake stop switch. By the way, I had a brake problem, not a break problem. I was taking a break when I posted my brake problem. Anyway, thanks for your sarcastic concern.

??? Correct Installation
Well, I reset the original brake stop switch and everything works okay. I went to the dealership and purchased a new brake stop switch ($15.00) and installed it just to be sure. Greetings SLK..... I to have had this problem and so far the changing of the switch has not corrected it. I was wondering where did you get instructions on installation and if By installing the switch wrong would it cause internal damage to the switch |

Well, I knew of this problem on another MB Forum, so I knew to remove the old switch and pull the stem out as far as it will go and reinstall it. The reason you pull the stem out before installing the switch is because the switch is self adjusting. When you pull the stem out, you will hear a noise...that's the internal adjustment mechanism. So, if you purchased a new switch and didn't pull the stem out prior to installing it, it isn't adjusted to your brake pedal. And no, I don't think it would cause any internal damage to the switch if it wasn't installed properly. By the way, when I picked up the new switch I was talking to the parts guy about the switch design and he pulled the stem until it stopped then pushed it back in and said "yeah, it happens all the time". I hope this make sense.
