The middle portion where the gears & buttons

I do not know the technical name of it, but the wood grained place where the gears and window buttons are in my 1989 420 sel is loose and the buttons have dropped down about an inch from where they should be. The rubber rim around the gear department is loose. How do I fix it or should I get another one? Thanks Jane

your talking about the lower center console, where the shifting gear lever is. thats the proper way to identify.
you have to disassemble the center consol, now if you are not a handyman, forget about doing it yourself, but if you are then say so and will try to give you simple instruction to follow

jane, you will need to order from the dealer the wood panel that contains the window buttons.the plastic lattice work that holds the switches in[they push up from the bottom]separates from the wood above it and the switches fall down inside when you try to operate them.i have tried to fix an old one but within weeks they collapse again.so buy the new part as it will also improve the looks of the car when the door is opened to get in.

Texas help for a lady

Is there anyone local who could help her DIY this panel repair?

The switches are a snap fit onto a plastic bezel below the console. They don't generally come loose, unless the bezel itself has come loose (it is stapled onto the underside of the wood console panel).

It's a good rule of thumb for DIY work (especially near electronics) that you disconnect the battery prior to rooting around in that area...lots of bundled wiring down there...
