124 (M103 2.6) starts then dies immediately
Car is 1989 300E. Engine was tired so transplanted a 115K 1993 2.6 from a 190E. 300E ran great before swap, just used and leaked oil like it was a good idea. 190 was running but wrecked. (Let me pause here to reflect on the fact that it is clear that the Benz designers did NOT have engine R & R in mind when they designed this car. A pox on them and may their testicles, if any, be crushed in a white-hot vise.)
Anyway, the car showed no signs of life at first then was coaxed to life with generous throttle application. It now will start almost instantly, dies within 2 seconds but will restart immediately thus repeating the cycle. The chassis electrics are the last thing I'd suspect since the car started and ran so well prior to the swap. The engine came with all it's various and sundry sensors, complete fuel injection system, senders and the like. Any thoughts? My limited knowledge points me toward the fuel system, but where? I did a search but grew weary as none of the ones I viewed seemed to address my specific problem. As a side note, I will be attempting to sell the 300E engine in part or whole. 255K with everything working but probably a bad head gasket or in need of head work in general. I thought the engine swap would be cheaper and easier than the head rework. Hmf..... Thanks to all. Chuck.

Seems to me that doing the swap was, at best, a risky proposition. You take an engine that is 4 years newer and expect that there were no changes to the systems over that time period. They are always making changes. Maybe one or more of those changes is the problem.
The gearing for the 2.6 is different than the gearing for the 3.0. That mayl also give you problems. Steve |

I never in my wildest dreams expected there were no changes over that time period. (Heck, I have a 1990 300E and there are marked differences between IT and the '89) I guess I should have asked the question differently so as not to draw fire for an obviously risky undertaking. (Actually, the swap was fairly uneventful except for accessing the transmission bolts and the cursed slip yoke in the driveshaft coming apart when the tranny shifted forward.) I might have gotten a better response with something like: "1993 190E, 2.6 starts well but dies instantly". Anyway, the problem turned out to be the ICV. The one from the donor engine was stuck and the one from the removed engine works. Starts great, idles great and will squeal the tires on the first upshift. Runs lots better than the tired 3.0. Hopefully the different final drive ratio won't wreak havoc on the computer. So good so far though. Chuck.
