Disconnecting the Battery - Is there a Proper Way?

I've been told I can reset my 4Matic warning light by disconnecting the battery of my 1992 300E 4Matic for about 15 minutes. Is there a 'proper' way to do this? Does is matter whether I remove the wire clamp from the hot (red) or ground (black) terminal?

Always disconnect the neg side b/c if you have a wrench on the pos. side and it slips or makes contact with any metal part of the chassis, it will result in a dead short [ ..and you will be electrocuted .....:):)]

Thanks Arther... makes complete sense...

At 12 volts you won't be electrocuted, but if there's enough current going through the wrench, it will get hot enough so that you will be burnt. And if there's anything around that is the least bit inflammable, you'll really be hating life.

Taking off: negative off first, then positive.
Putting on: positive first, then negative.

I did drop a wrench one time that happened to span and weld itself to both termionals, untill the wrench glowed red and poped in the middle like a 500 amp fuse. It was cool but it scared the s@#$ out of me.

When I was a kid I used to watch a farmer down the road weld with a couple of batteries in series.. not a bad weld, either.
