Calipers - rebuild or replace?
Changed the brake hoses on my 560SL and flushed the brake fluid. Hoses were original and brake fluid a bit nasty. I see that I now have a leak at both rear wheels. Will pull them to verify, but it's likely to be the calipers which are also original I'm sure with the original seals. So my question is, what is the wise thing to do? I can get new/rebuilt ones, ATE probably?, from the dealer for $185. I can get a reseal kit to rebuild them for about $10. I can get the WorldPac re-manufactured caliper, brand Cardone, from Phil for $83. I'd almost lean to getting the dealer product since I don't know about the Cardone brand and I also don't know what the inside of the caliper is going to look like for a rebuild. Comments appreciated.

I just had the same problem with the brakes on my 420sel. The passenger rear caliper started leaking after i did a brake job a couple months earlier. I was quoted $242 each fom the dealer, so I just ordered up a set from advance autoparts. They were ate rebuilt. It took me all of ten minutes to install each one and was back on the road leak free. It was worth it to me to just buy rebuilt ones with a lifetime warranty than to spend 500 dollars for the same thing.

Rebuilding is very easy. Take the pistons out, clean everything with brake fluid and put them back in with new seals and some brake grease.
I always use gloves, brake fluid is not healthy. Rebuild all four, the rebuild ones usually require much less pressure to brake. You don’t want the rear breaks to break harder than the front ones. If the calliper bores are scratched you have to replace them. |
